Sukiyaki is a Japanese style beef stew cooked in a big pan. I remember that it was always a special occasion when it was served, like my birthday, national holidays and so on. For many Japanese, Sukiyaki is the meal to have when celebrating something.
From Kobe to Tokyo
Sukiyaki is said to be originated in Kobe and its first Sukiyaki restaurant started in 1869, after that it spread to Tokyo around 1920.
But the way to eat it is a bit different from Kansai region to Kanto region. In Kanto area, it is cooked like a beef stew but originally in Kansai area, first beef is grilled on a flat pan, then after that put some vegetables in it, mixed with the meat juice.
